Hair Care

Welcome to our Hair Care page.  Taking care of your wig is essential to maintain its longevity and keep it looking beautiful.  Here are some tips we recommend for your hair care routine.

  • Wash and condition the hair regularly with a quality product that adds moisture.
  • About every two months, we recommend applying “Silicone Mix” to the hair after shampooing.  Leave it on the hair for about 15-20 minutes, rinse and style as usual, to retain its smoothy, silky feel. You can find it in your local beauty store or Amazon.
  • Detangle the hair with a wide tooth comb from the bottom up, to prevent damage or breakage.
  • NEVER, I repeat – NEVER go to bed on a wet head, especially curly hair.  The hair will dry in a tangled state and will be good for nothing but the garbage!  This is not a joke.  Please make a couple of braids instead, so that the hair can dry untangled.
  • Satin caps and satin pillows are wonderful ideas.  Cotton absorbs the moisture from your hair.
  • Avoid using excessive heat styling tools on your hair.  When necessary, be sure to apply a thermal protector.  Be sure to dry on a cool setting and flat-iron or curl on the lowest setting possible, to prevent heat damage.
  •  For wavy looks, heat is not necessary at all.  Just a little water in a spray bottle of ¼ conditioner and ¾ water should do it.

Two Options For Wearing Your Wig

Taking it off daily, or sewing it down

Taking your wig off daily for comfort is a good option if you want to give your scalp a break and avoid any discomfort or irritation that may come from wearing a wig for an extended period of time.  We provide an elastic band with each unit, for simple adjustments.   By adjusting the band, you are able to achieve a flatter, more custom fit.

Another option that you may use Is a wig grip band, made of velvet with a Velcro-like closure.  It simply gives the wig a textured surface around your head to hold onto.

On the other hand, sewing your wig down to a perimeter braid may create a more natural look, like hair growing out of your scalp.  This technique involves braiding your natural hair into cornrows and then sewing the wig onto the braids, creating a secure hold that allows you to wear the wig for an extended period of time without it shifting or slipping.   It’s pretty easy for many women to do themselves, or you may seek the help of a professional stylist.

MEASURE CORRECTLY FOR A PROPER FIT

It is important to measure your head with your hair cornrowed, to ensure a properly fitting wig, one that is secure and looks more natural on your head.

  • Small wigs typically have a circumference of 20-21.5 inches, a front-to-back measurement of 13-14 inches, and an ear -to-ear measurement of 12-13 inches.
  • Medium wigs typically have a circumference of 22-22.5 inches, a front-to-back measurement of 14-14.5 inches, and an ear-to ear measurement of 13-13.5 inches.
  • Large wigs typically have a circumference of 23-23.5 inches, a front-to-back measurement of 14.5-15 inches, and an ear-to-ear measurement of 13.5-14 inches.

If you are ever in doubt or between sizes, we recommend you order a wig that is too large , rather than one that is too small.  A wig that is too large can easily be altered.   One that is too small, not so much.  YouTube is a great resource on how this is done.
